Music in the Comfort of Home
As a therapeutic musician, I have witnessed firsthand music's profound impact on healing and well-being. While playing for individuals within the comforts of their homes, I recognize the unique opportunity to extend the therapeutic effects of music to loved ones in their living spaces. I observe the patient's physiological condition and tailor the musical elements to support any changes. I integrate my playing with the patient's rhythm of breathing, which can help relieve pain, moderate restlessness, and agitation.
Therapeutic music tends to the complex needs at the end of life. Dying can be described as crossing over a threshold, a liminal space, no longer fully engaged in life and not yet passed on. I am comfortable being present during this time of ambiguity and can ease this transition by offering "music into silence," a harp, and vocal vigil.
This vigil links the music and the musician with all present through a cradle of sound to gently help process emotions and make meaning of this challenging transition.
